The news is on TV. My son's doing his math homework. A story comes up about "earmarks," and how how Sarah Palin's Alaska asked the feds for $200 million. A McCain campaign spinmeister comes on and responds that Obama's Illinois got $300 million last year. The boy looks up and remarks, "That's a stupid comparison. A lot more people live in Illinois than live in Alaska." The kid knows his geography.

He's right, of course, but we looked up the numbers and did the math. The (2006) population of Illinois is 12,832,000 million to Alaska's 670,000. Obama asked for $311 million last year, Palin $198. We determined that Illinois got $24.23 per person and Alaska got $295.52 per person.

Too bad he can't vote. He's smarter than a lot of people who can.
