(((((Are your sure that it is that tricky to buy CD's from another state?))))

In my case, yes. While I usually have no trouble buying CDs through Fidelity, there were a couple of times where my order to buy was rejected. The reason, the Fidelity phone rep said, was that the CDs because were not "blue skied" in my state.

I'm not saying it happens a lot. (Fortunately, it was not an issue in your uncle's case.) But it does happen, and it's aggravating when it does. It all depends on where you live, what bank you're dealing with, and applicable state law.

(((((Given my good experiences with the above institutions, perhaps I should try and learn their online capabilities.))))

Go for it, if you think the rates paid are enough to offset such hassles as dealing with multiple accounts and waiting for interest checks from out-of-state banks to be mailed to you. Personally, I like the convenience of dealing with one source (Fidelity). But maybe that's just me.
