As a former TIAA-CREF employee, I can believe your experience. You do really need to find out from them whether or not it is allowed.What I vaguely remember from my training is that they dont allow withdrawals of any kind before age 59.5 without penalty. If TIAA-CREF is not answering your questions, then without delay, you should talk to the Plan Administrator at the institution your wife worked at and have them answer your questions.
