As an RN, avoid the ER if you can. Their mission is to "assess and stabilize" not diagnose and treat. If those coincide, great. If not, oh well. Got cancer? Here is some pain medication.

The ER misdiagnosed my step-son's appendicitis when I was still in school. I kick myself for not catching it. His appendix later burst, and he spent almost two weeks in the hospital with an NG tube down his throat after surgeons pulled out the pieces and soaked his peritoneum with antibiotics.

Go to your primary first if at all possible. He/she can better diagnose, or refer to specialist who can immediately.
