Aside from all the standard wisdom and advice, is there anyone out there who has retired on much less and is doing ok? And if so, how are they doing it? Yes, there are people who retired on less and are doing OK. I'm one of them. I've been retired for almost a year now. My secret to doing it was I made sure that I could cover all of my fixed expenses by making safe withdrawals from my portfolio. As for the variable expenses--such as entertainment--I cut back in some areas, figured out how to do things cheaper in others, and left open the option of temp work to pay for any extra stuff--but only as a last resort <gr>.
