At one point we burned a fair amount of oil to make electricity. It was cleaner than the coal of the time and more compact. As transportation uses and chemical feed stocks became more important, oil to electricity became a niche application.

The breakthroughs in energy storage are very exciting. They may level out as the resources involved have finite supplies at current prices. Further, where will our society apply those cheaper batteries? To the electric grid? To transportation uses? To consumer electronics?

A renewable takeover of the electric grid does not appear inevitable just yet, but these are exciting developments.
