This is one of my standard holiday recipes--pretty much nothing simpler since it's only 3 ingredients:

Cream together:

2 sticks of butter, softened
1/2 c. sugar

Stir in 2 1/2 c. flour

(Mixture will be crumbly)

Pat into sprayed 8x8 or 9x9 pan. Press down w/back of spoon to smooth. Cut raw dough into 1" squares and sprinkle with colored sugar. Bake at 350 degrees 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown. Tip: cover top of pan loosely with foil during last part of baking (like when there's 15-20 mins left) to prevent butter in recipe from turning too brown.
