Average is more and more a moving target. I use some "old school" shops that are basically one or two guys with a decent lathe and milling machine and that's about it. They probably can't spell NC programming.

Others have gone "high tech" and barely even do much more than load stock in the equipment. They are good for larger volumes or very complicated or difficult pieces where precision or quick turnaround is critical.

Welding is a useful skill for ANY industry that uses steel.
