Back when I was a manager at Friendly's Ice Cream in the early '80's, we were making vanilla Cokes for customers and I always wondered what took Coke and/or Pepsi so long to come up with their own version. When Cherry Coke finally came out, I figured it was only a matter of time before vanilla emerged. Still it took some time after to appear.

I had always imagined that it was the formula they were having problems with, because when you leave vanilla syrup sitting too long in the cola, it separates eventually. That is certainly not a concern with either Coke's or Pepsi's formula.

Even so, I too also prefer fountain vanilla Cokes to the ready-made version.
