Be somewhat careful with how you use a debit card/credit card. Also known as a Visa check card (I don't know Mastercards "brand name" for this product, they can function as either a credit card or a debit card that draws directly on your checking account. You can use it as a debit card or as a credit card, with very few functional or visible differences between the two types of transactions.

This is great in most situations, because it keeps you foolish, not letting you spend what you don't have.

However, you should be careful about using this type of card when renting a car, reserving a hotel, etc., as many of these merchants will run an authorization for much more than your projected bill will be, as a safety margin. This could make it hard to get to the cash in your checking account, since some of it may be "reserved".
