being a meatless day for Catholics. It always seemed so silly to me. The Church decreed it as a day of penance, in anticipation of the feast day of Christmas. So Catholics "made do" with lobster and caviar, in many cases. Penance, indeed.heh. never thought of it that way, but you're right.'meatless' was supposed to be penance, but Mom used it as an excuse to cook Fish &/or Pancakes (>BIL's family tradition was Christmas Eve Cioppino ... which ,happy for me, he has continued.
