Blacks owned black slaves first. There were even black slave owners in America during the Civil War.

How very predictable. Let's substitute a different sin than slavery and see how it plays:

My neighbor was a thief first. There were even thieves in America during the Civil War.

Implying that you are cool with theft, and that you skillfully deflect blame by pointing to other sinners or even to the victims themselves.
The ridiculousness of this thought process should be glaringly obvious. Is slavery a sin, yes or no? Was slavery always a sin or did the rules change at some point? If the rules changed who changed them and why? If slavery was a sin why did the catholic church sanction and participate in the act?

OK, this is where you say that church leaders are not perfect and sometimes sin. Then this is where I then ask how can you claim that the pope is infallible? I will also point out that if the church was so very wrong about slavery and other things (the nature of the solar system comes to mind), what basis is there for giving them any credibility at all? Then you will likely claim that the holy spirit leads the church, and I will point out that the church seems to have a leadership vacuum.

Jesus called his disciples to be a shining city on a hill, the RCC sorely misses this goal. Listen to that little voice deep down inside you. The one that says "this is all a bunch of crap made up by humans". The more you examine and scrutinize the history of Christianity and the RCC, the more you realize that this is the only explanation that answers all of the hard questions. There is no wizard of oz, merely mortal men pulling levers behind a curtain.
