Btw, employee porn-viewing is pretty common, and generally overlooked as long as the worker bee is getting his work done, not downloading humongous files that impact resources, and not circumventing security protocols. Employers are smart to set company-wide standards, and blocking porn for everyone is a good, non-discriminatory, way to do that.

Common, really?

In the company I'm working for, any not-work-related-web-browsing is terms for dismissal.

They only ask me to check if they suspect something, but they have asked, and they have fired. No porn was found, just some common shopping and stuff, but the owner considers that theft because the person is doing that on the time that the company is paying for.

At [big company], we had a more liberal "limited personal use" policy, as long as it didn't interfere with work product.

I don't think he lied, because he didn't make changes to the guy's computer.

There were other ways to say the same thing and I would probably have said, "We upgraded/changed some things on the firewall/server/router. If you can't get somewhere you need to, let me know."

Had a user contact me yesterday because he couldn't get to a website - the firewall was blocking it - turned out he was entering the address wrong.
