But how does one get started? I know it would mean going to AA meetings, but if that is not in the cards

I don't go to meetings. I just don't buy my poison: wine. I don't have a problem with social drinking as I don't really 'go out'. And my family doesn't push if I turn down a drink on the holidays. But if I buy my poison, I consume it. Most of the time I don't, and this works.

There is a person with a plan to get over being a drinker by just deciding not to be a drinker:

Maybe this works for some, if they can keep a promise to themselves.
I have never done the AA thing; community very small and work keeps me busy.
