But in a left handed house, that is not possible. Door must be opened with right hand. Shaking hands requires a crossover maneuver.

By your definition, my house is right handed, and my neighborhoods are left handed.

I understand the steps to walk around the car. Backing the car into the garage would eliminate that problem. With out previous house, it was safer to back into my driveway. No steps in our garage, so that isn't an issue. To much stuff to get a car in the garage is a different problem.

There is no requirement to open a door with a specific hand. I routinely open doors with my dominate hand. It doesn't matter whether or not my non-dominate hand is closer. From both inside and outside, most of the time I open my front door with my right hand.
