...but it does make me wonder how auto-focus would handle that.

Without electrical contact it couldn't. You'd have to go all manual. Cameras now are smart enough to know not only that a lens is attached, but WHICH lens. I would think if it's not attached it won't fire (except maybe in manual mode).
