But it will not go the other way, correct? I cannot play an HD-DVD in my current DVD player.

Correct. A DVD will play in a (not yet released) "HD-DVD" player, but not the other way around. The HD-DVD player will read the disc with a blue laser, which is more concentrated than DVD's red laser.

Since the blue laser is more focused the data can be burned onto the disc much smaller than with a red laser. Several times smaller, actually. A dual layered AOD will hold about 35 gigs. Thus, more data on the same space....and that allows the video/audio to be recorded with less compression.

The HD-DVD players will be made so that they read regular DVDs. I'm not sure how, but perhaps a (nowadays inexpensive) red laser will also be included inside the HD-DVD player.

Keep in mind that these technologies will also crossover to computers. We will be able to back up a 15 gig hard drive onto an affordable disc.
