But this didn't decrease the amount of gun-related crime in the U.K. In fact, gun-related crime has nearly doubled in the U.K. since the ban was enacted.

John Stossel's simplistic opinion notwithstanding, gun violence in the UK is actually falling:

In 2010/11, firearms were involved in 11,227 recorded offences in England and Wales, the seventh consecutive annual fall and a decrease of 13 per cent compared with the previous year (when 12,976 offences were recorded).

There have been 62 mass killings in the US in the last 30 years. In nearly all cases, the guns were legally obtained. The gun-related homicide rate per 100K in the US is 2.92 In the UK, it is 0.04.

And there's this:
“The map overlays the map of firearm deaths above with gun control restrictions by state,” explains Florida. “It highlights states which have one of three gun control restrictions in place – assault weapons’ bans, trigger locks, or safe storage requirements. Firearm deaths are significantly lower in states with stricter gun control legislation. Though the sample sizes are small, we find substantial negative correlations between firearm deaths and states that ban assault weapons (-.45), require trigger locks (-.42), and mandate safe storage requirements for guns (-.48).”

Listen: I'm a gun-owner. I don't want to ban all firearms. And I don't think that there is any magical panacea. But I do think assault-style weapons bans, "gun show loopholes", trigger locks, safe storage requirements, stricter licensing requirements (all of which the NRA has opposed), and better funding and insurance coverage for mental health should all be things we can have a grown-up conversation about.

Now is the time.
