Buy the SPY. The spy can be hedged with a protective put, giving you 90% of the markets up side with no down side. I have clients that were up 29% last with no risk to there initial investment. This is one of the greatest invetsment strategies available today.
The only thing equal to it be the same strategy with the DIA.

Another advantage with the SPY. It can be bought and sold during market hours. Many times I have bought SPY well below were it closed for the day. Some were up 1 to 3 % on the day I made the purchase. That can never be done with an index fund.

Index funds are good for small investment, less then $5,000 or if you would like to invest small amounts over time, 20 bucks a week. Anyone with $50,000 or more to invest would be a fool to use an index fund.
