Does California require the same filing status for state returns that is used on the federal returns?

I'm working with a part year California resident that wants to file MFS and was told that was their best choice last year by a CA tax preparer because of community property. I think they are leaving a lot of money on the table on their federal return by not MFJ with an injured spouse form, I do about 3 California returns a year so I'm not as knowledgable as I could be and would feel better about what I'm doing right now if it was a month ago when I had time for more research.
