"SACRAMENTO — As the state moves to expand healthcare coverage to millions of Californians under President Obama's healthcare law, it faces a major obstacle: There aren't enough doctors to treat a crush of newly insured patients"
See, the folks who have never done anything off campus, like the President, can do all the studies and symposiums and late night pizza and dope study sessions they like but they have no clue about pilot testing, planning, optimizing, and any of the others things people in the tea
Some moron here on PA, years before ObamaCare was writing about doctor shortages.
NOW, ENTER a great prize from Liberals: AMNESTY. Millions more patients on the way!!!!
DESERVED consequences on the way. Don't blame me, I'm merely supporting Liberalism since 2006 for reasons like this.
"BUT WE GOT GOOGLE! WE GOT APPLE! WE'LL BE FINE!!!!!" ok.
You better get to Detroit soon. We know all the best medical grads come from there so that's a great place to recruit.

Yeah, health care in CA is going to be a real riot. Literally, when the masses start having to stand in government health care lines all day long while the Silicon valley types speed past them to the private clinic. How long do you think before they start targeting doctors and nurses in the gov clinics out of frustration?

For now, the greedy overpaid racist IT yuppies think they will be unscathed. Their HR department has assured them their health benefits will be as good as usual. Even Lumberg told them to keep doing TPS reports and their health care will be fine.
But in the end, even greedy yuppies can't escape math.
They'll wait longer.
They'll have lower quality doctors.
Frankly they don't deserve to see a doctor. They'll be relegated to assistants, nurses, and any other title that really means "not a friggin doctor"
Once amnesty is passed, it's time for chain migration into Caliphornia.

Not so much from Detroit, but Ann Arbor, just down the road, has a top ten med school. And Michigan State is in the top twenty.
There's a simple solution to any doctor shortage. Train more doctors. In the meantime, import them. Supply meets demand and all that.

A few around here.
The ones I know in real life are actually very very very very overpaid and loving life. Not yuppies, these are guys and gals who made it past that level. You won't find them on this venue. Just the grunts.
See you at doctor shortage day in Caliphornia.
Obama 2012....2014 is coming. It's gonna be a pleasure to slowly watch the fun begin.

Looks like Bay Area Bigots will be getting new neighbors soon.
And years ago here it was established just how much they want that.
2014 can't come soon enough.

To some extent, yes. The "doctor market" isn't free. The AMA and med schools intentionally limit the number of doctors to keep prices, i.e. wages, high. The government regulates doctors trying to ensure they are minimally qualified. And there is no free market for labor, doctors included. The movement of labor is constrained by immigration barriers.
But still, the solution to a doctor shortage is simple: make more doctors and in the meantime import them from elsewhere.
There's another less simple solution that's even better in my opinion: utilize doctors more efficiently. Because of tradition and regulation, doctors have a monopoly on medical practices that could just as effectively be performed by nurses, EMTs and other trained medical professionals. There's also the problem that the current system rewards specialization far more than general practice.

It is already beginning to make significant changes.
Look up "medical tourism" and it is a huge and booming business--but only for doctors and hospitals located outside the US.
US insurance companies are very slowly beginning to use--and even very actively encourage--people who need some types of expensive (but fairly routine) surgery to get it done overseas. Insurance company covers everything--plane fare, visas, medical care, whatever--and savings of $100+k/patient are readily available.

If someone did a search, they'd find my post on this board YEARS ago talking about how I made a small investment overseas in a business that caters to what I felt would be growing medical tourism.
So um yeah, I'm well aware of medical tourism hence my investment is very very close to an Apollo hospital facility.
And the income doesn't get taxed by Obama.
If you ever need accomodations in a few years when you go abroad for health care let me know I'll give you the PA discount.

Why would they have to wait at all? They just take an insurance-company paid vacation to a medical tourist spot and live it up. And it would not be limited to IT yuppies--that is the part that makes it fun. If the insurance company really wants the savings, they make it worthwhile to everyone (because the insurance company saves on everyone who uses it).

That's why cost of insurance is on the W2s this year ..... come 2014 everyone getting company paid or assisted bennies will discover they had a large increase in taxable income while no new dollars went into their wallet.

Answer: TAX HEALTH BENEFITS.

PS: And then, it's time to end the deduction for state income taxes from Federal income taxes. Once again, let's go for the gold and see who has to cough it up. It's high time these Tax Chickenhawk liberals open their wallets....or let US open their wallets on their behalf. In this end, this will be the way.

"There aren't enough doctors to treat a crush of newly insured patients"
My uncle was a doctor in Puerto Rico. He was on the southern side of the island and the only doctor within a couple of dozen miles. I went to visit him once, we were going to go to the beach but he had to go into the office first. He had about a hundred people or so waiting for him when he got to the office. I assumed that were weren't going to the beach today but he dispatched with them in about 3 hours. Basically the nurses provided all of the treatment on most patients, he reviewed their work and only directly dealt with a few.
A big problem with healthcare in this country is the large dichotomy between being a doctor and not. For most illnesses, a nurse or a pharmacist is completely capable of dealing with the issue but if they need a prescription, a doctor has to get involved in most states. In Cal they have doctors that do nothing but write prescriptions for marijuana. Cal also has a perpetual "water shortage" but is the only place on the planet where people grow rice in a desert. The state could end the water shortage in a nanosecond by fining farmers with standing water in their fields (necessary for growing rice) on 110 degree days. The state could allow marijuana for recreational use as Washington State has and that would literally free up thousands of doctors. The state could let pharmacists write their own prescriptions for minor illnesses (as Florida does); they could expand the role of nurses.
Having a doctor shortage because lots more of the people have access to a doctor is a good problem to have, ne? The solution won't be so hard.
