'Morning Fools,

Yesterday, I published a piece about the new show Arrow, which you can find here:

http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2012/10/11/will-this-n...

I had two reactions in watching the premiere:

1. Solid action. It can't be easy making an archer look like a badass, but Stephen Arnell pulled it off nicely. Also, I like how he plays the character -- darker than the Ollie I remember from the comics and from the old GL/GA series, but appropriate for what the script called for: an out-for-vengeance vigilante. (In this case, vengeance for those who'd been hurt by Starling City's corrupt elite.)

2. Weak supporting characters and plenty of holes in the plot. I don't get why Ollie says the island "forged" him into a weapon. The script makes clear he's burdened with a sense of atonement, but what does that have to do with mastering archery and turning yourself into a weapon a la Batman? Maybe this is something the writers will get to in subsequent episodes, but the lack of clear motivating factors makes the relationships shown on screen clunky, and in some cases weird. (Like with his little sister.)

Nevertheless, on the whole, I think there's potential for the character and this show. Can it be the next Smallville? Stylistically, I hope it doesn't come to that. But I also don't think it needs to in order for Arrow to have a good long run.

FWIW and Foolish best,

Tim

Smallville had longevity only because even after all the crap it was still Supes after all!

Green Arrow's skill set somehow lacks credibility compared to say Superman and the backstory there before Smallville corrupted it.

Arrow was always, IMO, a poor man's substitute for Batman - the masked human vigilante with special toys. Batman's toys are better.

Hi Ken,

Green Arrow's skill set somehow lacks credibility compared to say Superman and the backstory there before Smallville corrupted it.

OK, let's forget for a moment that Superman is, effectively, a god in the comics. I wouldn't call his skill set "credible" -- (grins) -- but I see what you're saying here: Superman is a known quantity in the public consciousness. Not so much with GA.

Arrow was always, IMO, a poor man's substitute for Batman - the masked human vigilante with special toys. Batman's toys are better.

I'd agree that, so far, the series is showing GA as litte more than Batman with a bow and arrow. But that's not how the character developed in the comics. That Oliver Queen burned hot with righteous fury, which, in the Justice League at least, serves as a counter to Batman's cold, exacting vengeance.

Also: the GA that Mike Grell reinvented in the late '80s with The Longbow Hunters trades gadgets for accuracy, stealth, and hunting skill, attributes the character would have naturally honed as a survivalist castaway.

You'll have to forgive me for wading into the weeds like this. I cover the comics industry because I love the medium, and have since since I was a kid.

FWIW and Foolish best,

Tim

OK. They seem to be going for that in Arrow. I never really focused on that.

"Also: the GA that Mike Grell reinvented in the late '80s with The Longbow Hunters trades gadgets for accuracy, stealth, and hunting skill, attributes the character would have naturally honed as a survivalist castaway."

I know very little about where things went after the 60s.

No forgiveness required. You're much more knowledgeable than I am. And I'm probably not the intended audience anyway. I still hope it gets better. I really hated what and how Smallvillle corrupted things.
