2005 Report from the Canadian Medical Protective Association, the main way Canadian physicians self-insure against medico-liability threats. Perhaps those opposed to Canadian-style health care might take some comfort in the small numbers of cases settled/taken to trial, for a population of about 32 million people, where almost everyone is insured from birth.

The powerful CMPA occasionally appears in the Canadian press, usually complaining about "skyrocketing" premiums and the like, much like we see here in the US. I have yet to see the Canadian press take a serious look--beyond scare-mongering headlines-- at the actual numbers and finances of the CMPA. Just like here in the US.

Also perhaps noteworthy, the ratio of damage awards going to patients/plaintiffs to the amount the physicians spend, through the CMPA, to defend their members. Almost 1 to 1. Of course all we read in the "news"papers is about plaintiff's lawyers taking 30% of the award, sometimes. Never about the amounts physicians spend defending the relatively small number of claims. Very successfully, usually, as the numbers also show.
