Can't you teach the Harmony the code by firing the Sony's remote into the bottom of the Harmony?

I could if the original remote actually had a button on it to do that kind of quick switch. But it doesn't. Even on the original remote, you had to use the menu system.

This is the dirty little secret of the Harmony remotes -- the database of remote codes they access mostly contains what are called the "Professional" codes. These are codes that, in general, aren't available on your consumer remote that came with the TV/Receiver/DVD Player/etc. The codes exist, and the equipment recognizes them, but only professional service techs or people with pre-programmed high-end remotes typically have a way to use them.

So the remote codes database is at the mercy of people who are willing to take the time to discover (or disclose) and enter these pro codes. And if your particular piece of equipment doesn't have a code for some direct function that other similar devices have (either due to age, or because it's a more basic model, or whatever) then you're just SOL.
