With respect, consecutive division championships are overrated compared to the Cardinals 11 World Championships;-)

So the Cards are basically a once in a lifetime team while the Braves are your constant companion?

No, they haven't been over the course of 162, but they have been just good enough to play ball in October, where they have become one of the most ridiculously resilient teams I've ever seen. How many times in the last couple of playoff seasons have they been one inning, one out, one *strike* from elimination and come back to win them all?

So the Cards are basically a once in a lifetime team

I guess it depends on how long of a life you're talking about...

2011
2006
2004
1987
1985
1982
1968 (lost to Tigers!!!)
1967
1964

Bold indicates WS champs, non-bold indicates NL pennant winners (WS loser).

That's in my lifetime. I'm sure that if I missed one our resident Card fans will correct me shortly.

I interpreted "once in a lifetime team" within the context of uncanny playoff comeback magic, not in terms of a team that doesn't have a history of winning pennants and WS titles. But I could be wrong.

A trip down Memory Lane. I attended a Catholic school that had the degree of discipline that you might expect, but during the WS the nuns brought in radios and we all listened to the games. No studying done.

Mickey Stanley (our CF) playing SS
Gibson's record K performance
Horton's throw to the plate nailing Brock
The 10-run inning in Game 6
Lolich winning three games - Game 7 on two days rest.. and a CG to boot!!!

The celebration of breaking a 23 year WS drought. World War II vets talking about Hank Greenberg coming back from the war just in time to help Detroit get over the top.

Ah... great memories.

Nope, those are all the ones from '64-forward.

The Cards' other series appearances are (WS wins in bold):

1926 - Beat Babe Ruth and the Yankees
1928 - Lost to Babe Ruth and the Yankees
1930 - Lost to the Philadelphia A's and Lefty Grove
1931 - Beat the A's and Lefty Grove
1934 - The famous "Gashouse Gang"
1942 - Beat Joe DiMaggio and the Yankees
1943 - Lost to Joe DiMaggio and the Yankees
1944 - Beat the St. Louis Browns (Now the Orioles)
1946 - Beat Ted Williams and the Red Sox

I've always loved baseball for the consistency and the history linked down through the years.

Plus, there are stats galore. Every pitch is a recordable event with a zillion different things that can happen.

History Lesson for Today:

The American League began as the Western League in 1894. It did not become the American League until 1900 and a major league until 1901.

Name the ONLY Western League team from 1894 still in its original city.

Wow, tough question. The only logical candidates are Detroit, Cleveland, New York and Boston.

I'll say...the Yankees?
