A few months back, Consumer Reports did a study on Financial Planners. One of their reporters had 5 or 6 of the largest services do a "Personal Financial Plan" for her and her family (she was standard upper-middle-class fare).

CR wasn't very happy with any of them, but if I remember correctly AmEx was the worst. The AE planner basically recommended nothing but Amex financial products, even though they didn't make much common sense.
