Celanese continues to implement its low pressure synthesis to ethanol technology based on methanol to acetic acid technology rather than traditional Fischer Tropsch and methanol homologation, notoriously high pressure technology.

The technology can presumably be applied to any source of synthesis gas. In the US, that will be natural gas. The carbon source in China is not announced, but would presumably be coal. They are calling it Celanese TCX® ethanol process technology.
