C&EN has a first rate article on the status of 3D printing. The emphasis is on materials used. PLA (polylactic acid) seems to be preferred for low cost printers, but other materials are discussed and many are under development.

They are enthusiastic about use of 3D printing to make simple plastic tools that otherwise would require machining. Growth rate is attractive but from a small based. Majors seem to be investing. The future looks promising.
