Just so everyone knows, this wasn't me---it was our local CFI.

This fellow was locally known as a Luke Skywalker, but he was a very
affable guy and a CFII who trained lots of people around here.

We get a lot of fog, and he used to brag that he could get in when no
one else could by flying up a little bowl canyon just northeast of the
airport and then popping up out of it about 1/8 mile from the runway
numbers. Every time I looked to the right on final approach and gazed
down into that little valley I thought about him and thought, That guy
is going to kack himself someday doing that. It's just what he did, in
a borrowed '99 Cessna 182 packed with electronics.

This is the first time I have lost a friend to his own piloting. I hope
this happens very seldom.

Fly safe out there, folks
