This co-worker of yours brings to mind what the great novelist Anthony Trollope, himself a man of deep faith but intensely practical said about religion:

"Religion does not exist to make us miserable, and it is not to be prattled about, as the Evengelicals (in the Church of England) do."

I don't know why the idea of quiet, personal faith is so alien to the current climate in this country.

Sigh.
