I've been reading some articles on the proliferation of LEGAL duplication of rare coins taking place in China. The fakes/reproductions are getting better and better. One story claimed they had access to the original US mint dies! I'm wondering how long before the top grading services start getting fooled? Heck they are even counterfeiting the PCGS/NGC holders. If true, this could wind up crushing the rare coin business. Am I over-reacting? Are the 3rd party graders good enough to catch this stuff?
It's hard for me to believe they have the original dies. Sounds like urban legend.Do you have a link?AW
http://askaboutcoins.com/2009/08/counterfeit-coins-are-every...although this only mentions presses, not the actual dies. That said, the technology is only going to get better and with the financial incentives so huge, it seems inevitable that the TPGs are going to start certifying fakes. Heck, it has already happened. I read in the IHC journal "Longacre's Ledger" that series specialist Rick Snow has identified a couple of fakes in real PCGS holders.
