Don't even have to look at the board for this one...

17. ... cxd4

Okay, I'm a little tipsy, but the pawn that's protecting the queen is taking your queen, which I think you should get that...that should be the c pawn if I remember the board correctly.

I looked at it from every angle...I didn't see a better move for you to make. I'd leave my queen there and develop around her if you refused to take her, and because of my space advantage I could wait forever. Plus your c pawn is under heavy fire and if you didn't take my queen it would have fallen this next turn. Then, if you moved your queen away (depending on where you moved it), I'd play Qe4+ and win your rook and you'd have been in all kinds of trouble. Trading queens was your only play.

As a sidebar, note that my pawns are now no longer doubled. My isolated a pawn hasn't hurt me at all thus far, and with everything pointed kingside it shouldn't.

I prolly shouldn't say this cause like I said, I'm a bit tippsy, but I'm coming for your c pawn next, and I'll trade my bishop before I give up my knight... I think my knight is excellent right now and my bishop sucks.

Okay, off to bed with the wifey, who may or may not have passed out. :-)

Chris

Had dinner tonight, just found out some friends will probably be separating. They're in counselling now we found out, and while that is not surprising really to us the suddenness and soonness of action on their parts is pretty shocking. Dinner lasted much later than I thought as we talked late with our other couple friends.

I figured you'd go after the solo c pawn next and had taken a look at a couple other moves but your queen killed me on those. Gotta get a good night's rest and not think about that any more.

Zowie,

That was my attempt to italicize

Let me tell everyone now about my typo problem at home. My wife has a French keyboard set up with all the French characters on it (she's a French teacher, so I make the sacrifice). I switch back to the English setting when typing, since I don't hunt and peck it usually isn't a problem, except for a few buggers like brackets >< that my fingers just don't remember. :) I usually catch the typos, but get more than usual when typing on this keyboard. My apologies.

No lesson in that...I was sorry to hear about your friends getting separated...that's always hard. Do they have kids? If not then it's not too terribly bad.

The chess lesson is sacrifice for better position. You couldn't really do anything about it. You either take my bishop and wind up where we are now, or you could leave it alone and wind up losing two pawns.

Now it's a race to see if I can make my positional advantage more powerful than your material advantage...

I was thinking about 21. b3 as well to protect the c pawn, but decided to move the pawn forward to get it out of immediate danger and gain a bit more space.

If I do this enough, I may actually learn to describe what I was thinking as well as learning strategy.
