Colovion: I'm not a huge fan of Fallon, but I did like this skit on his show regarding Lehrer's inability to really do much to keep the debate on the schedule he wanted to:

Yeah, funny. Although about 3 minutes too long (out of 3:30). BTW, the 0bama stand-in was pretty good. SNL has never managed to get anyone even remotely decent. Which is mitigated by the fact that they can't bring themselves to make a joke about him anyway.

The debate was more substantive than just about any I can recall, and I would chalk that up to the light-handed moderation. It will probably never happen again, since left-wingers are scapegoating him. But regardless of performance (go back to the Bush-Gore debates that Bush won, this is still true), the debates are less useful when the moderator injects himself and his opinions into it and cuts people off mid-sentence when they are actually saying something of value. The moderator should make sure that the candidates actually answer the questions asked, rather than filibuster and go on to an entirely different topic. Lehrer could have done that more, but still it was better than trying to steal airtime.
