On more than one occasion, I have traded in and out of the same position more than once in a day.

I know that the normal convention is to report every trade separately -- does it still apply in this case.

e.g., on 1/10/99: buy 100 msft, sell 100 msft w/ gain, buy 300 msft, sell 300 msft w/ gain (gain on each so no wash sale considerations). Can I just say jan 10 buy 400 msft, sell 400 msft?

This should be fine - both would be short term sales, just make sure your total sales proceeds matches the 1099-B so you will not get a IRS correspondence audit 2 years from now.
