Coming late to this thread but I have done this to two (original) iPhones and the process worked very smoothly on AT&T's "unlock" website, at:

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/termsAndCondit...

Fill in info, wait about 24 hours, backup iPhone on iTunes, restore to factory settings and iTunes says "iPhone is unlocked" at which point you can restore from backup and the phone is back to where it used to be, only unlocked.
