Does anyone have any experience with something like these lovelies?

I ask because it really is time to retire the ol' Ultegra 53x39, and I need something that will be easier on the knees. I admit it - I don't like the looks of triple chainrings, nor do I want to go through the whole nine yards of replacing bottom bracket/derailleur/shifter and whatever else is required for a triple.

So the question is, does anyone know if the gear ratios on a compact crankset such as this will be sufficiently lower than the 53x39, 12x27 set up that I have now so that maybe I can do some of that magical spinning up hills and not have to resort to a triple?

Thanks for any input,
