Hi everybody --
Has anyone made their own concrete countertops? We are considering it. Does anyone have concrete countertops in their home? Please let me know how you like them? Do they stain easily? Are you happy with them? Thanks for any input on either having them or making them. I appreciate it.

No expertise. I've watched home improvement shows where they install concrete countertops. It looked to me that it would be a difficult project for a DIYer to do in regards to quality of finish.

I've looked at concrete countertops. The hardest part about making them is making the forms in which you make the countertops, if you can make a square "box" with a flat bottom then you can make a countertop.

This website has a FAQ about concrete.
http://www.buddyrhodes.com/faq_template.asp?include=FAQS&subsec=concrete
They also sell a white concrete mix, and colors to add into it.
http://www.buddyrhodes.com/template.asp?include=Products
your basic normal grey mix would work quite well for a lot of colors, but for some things a white mix would be needed.

The best thing this guy has is edge molding so you can make a nice edge for your counters.

This guy also sells some supplies, and has classes on how to make the countertops, and he just came out with a book which was VERY good.

He also sells color and aditives for concrete here

If you want to read up on other peoples doing concrete countertops, go to
http://www.taunton.com/
register for their taunton's plus
http://www.taunton.com/store/shoppingcart/ssl/tplus.asp

and then go to the breaktime forums which are the chart boards for the fine homebuilding magazine. It is mostly pro's and dedicated DIYers there and search, you'll find a LOT of threads on concrete countertops by people who have done them. Also a few profesionals who make countertops for a living have points of advice.

We have them. Yes they stain fairly easily, if the finish gets cracked. The only place it's been a problem is near the stove, where we keep the cooking oils. The finish is awax that can be reapplied by us. The drawback to the wax is that you can't put a hot pan on it or you"ll melt the finish. But they look really nice and have worked out well near the sink and dish storage area so if you put them in just keep them away from oil.

Hi Gina -

Thanks for telling me about your concrete countertops. I had heard that they do stain, so that was not a surprise to me. Can you tell me, if, once they stain (like from your cooking oils) can you clean them in any way? Or are you just stuck with that stain forever? Also, did you make them yourself? Thanks so much.
