A Public Policy Polling survey of 1247 registered voters came out Tuesday. Granted, not a huge sample at all, but still, the answers to some conspiracy theory questions leave no doubt about loony fringe flapping in the political wind out there.

For starters, 13% avowed that yes indeed, Obama is the Antichrist. Another 13% were open to that craziness. A detailed Biblical debunking of this is where you'd expect it: (Snopes is apparently copy-proofed, so no paste of the gist...)

The PPP survey revealed that 37% thought that global warming was a hoax, 12% were not sure if it was or not, and a slim majority of 51% agreed with overwhelming majority view of established science and thought that it was not. 28% believed in some sinister global New World Order conspiracy which wants to rule the whole world through authoritarian government. 25% were "not sure," and only a minority of 46% thought that world takeover by some nefarious conspirators was bogus.

Hark--despair not!! Most were not unhinged at some of the more extreme insanities. For example, only 7% believe the moon landing was faked and a mere 14% believe Bigfoot is plodding around somewhere. Also, only 4% accept that "shape-shifting alien reptilians control our world by taking on human form." In other good anti-fringe results, Paul McCartney was surely relieved that only 5% believe he died in a car crash in 1966 and was replaced by a double so the Beatles could continue their success. Finally, just 11% think that the US government evilly allowed 9-11 to take place.

(I think I'm glad that PPP did not ask if the "Antichrist's" administration gave the green light for Sandy Hook in order to get support for gun control...OMG in Heaven Above).

Speaking of gun control....most major proposals now appear to be doomed or near-doomed. How ironic that scary numbers of Americans apparently agree on wacko theories while needed agreement on gun law reform is likely to stay just that--a theory?
