I'm not too familar with the scenery along that route, but here's a resource you might appreciate: AAPG's Highway Geologic Maps. They include structural cross-sections and provide some interesting text, as well as the basic geologic map features. Knowing which units are exposed where are good clues to something worth seeing. Seems like there's also a book or two on roadcuts back east that may be of interest. I kept the AAPG maps in my car when I moved from Oklahoma to Washington to California and it made the drives a lot more fun for me. But then, I'm a geogeek. ; )
