I put my Road Glide in for its 5000 mile service. I was told $330.00. OK, this is required for the new engine warranty so I'll have to swallow and pay.
I expected they might find other stuff that might need to be tweaked. Sure enough, they did. Front rotors warped, needed replaced (which I suspected from the way the handbrake felt). Rear brake pads worn out. Top cover tranny seal was leaking. Rear tire needed replaced. <sigh> I told them to do everything except the rear tire as I knew an independent where I could get a better deal. total? $728.00! <swallow hard>
Then I go to my independent (where I know the owner and the mechanic) to see what kind of deal I could get for the rear tire. Price was right so I went with the Metzeler, an upgrade from the standard Dunlop/Harley tire. Well, turns out the rear rotor is glazed and blued from the cylinder not retracting all the way and the pads were in constant contact. <sigh> OK, replace it. Pads were wearing on an angle so I had to replace those too. Replaced with the new organic pads (which are much quieter). Next? Wheel bearings hadn't been installed properly previously so they had to beat the axle out. Yep, new replacement parts, bearings and all. Result? another $601.00! <gulp again>
So... $1330.00 later I'm back on the road. Too bad these were almost all safety issues (except for the 5000 mile service), or I'd've put it off. But at least now I'm ready for the road.
I just wish I could afford to go somewhere!
ten -gonna have to start getting mine own hands dirty again <sigh>
