My question is does anyone have any comparative data regarding the degree to which a spin ball will hook or slice vs. a distance ball?

The USGA used to have test reports on their website that indicated the results of hitting the same ball with a driver and a wedge. This could indirectly answer your question. But alas, I can't find such a report right now. Perhaps one has to pay for them now.

Personally I use a "soft" Reygrande ball. It helps me where it counts..around and on the green. I'll gladly sacrifice some distance, if I can control the ball and make it stop reasonably quickly.

Best wishes on your upcoming retirement.
