David,The next step is speaking to a supervisor and re-explaining your situation to her/him. That is all that you can do.You signed a legally binding agreement stating that if you paid late, you would be responsible for such an interest rate until Amex decides to lower it again (apparently a year?). If they refuse to budge, then balance transfer the amount. If they are a newer card and you donot wish to keep it open, call and cancel.-T
