Definitely don't over do it. When we bought our house, we made sure to have enough to repaint and recarpet the entire house. Since then we just do things as we have money, or feel the need. The basement finish I actually planned to make a slow project of a couple years, but I ended up just wanting to get it done, so it was about 9 months. Our house was pretty easy too. All it really needed was paint and carpet. The rest is fine, or at least bareable until we decide to replace (such as cabinets).
