I know nothing about this guy (but I will be looking him up shortly). Received this plea in email that the Energy candidate is a bad choice.

Subject: Tell President Obama: Don't appoint this fracking guy

Dear Friend,

President Obama keeps saying we need to confront climate change.

So why is he considering appointing a major proponent of fracking to lead the Department of Energy?

According to Reuters, President Obama is seriuosly considering appointing Dr. Ernest Moniz - the director of MIT's Big Oil-sponsored Energy Institute and a big believer in expanding toxic, climate-heating gas fracking.

At a time when the last thing we should be doing is undermining our progress against climate change, Moniz is the wrong choice to head one of the most important agencies in the fight for a sustainable energy future.

Sign the petition to President Obama now:

Natural gas is better than the alternatives, which are worse. It is cleaner than coal and oil, at far less risk to the extractors than coal. We don't have a choice between clean energy and unclean energy. The choice is between 95% imperfect choices and no energy at all.

Probably because Obama is interested in replacing coal as a major source of electricity in the US. Nat gas is a boon to the the environmental goal of cutting down on carbon dioxide emissions. One needs a baseload supply, and our choices are (since hydro is limited) either nat gas or nuclear. Currently natural gas from fracking is quite a bit cheaper than building new nuke plants.

Yes, but fracking is unacceptably hazardous to the environment with the potential to poison the water table. That practice must be stopped until they (the frackers) can demonstrate there is no such hazard.

From what I've read, that potential is rather small. On the other side of the scales, what is the potential damage to the environment from burning coal?
