Detroit wants a bailout with no strings attached. The state won't give them one, they're trying the feds (who, with the GOP in charge of the House, won't be giving them one.) They'll fight any strings kicking and screaming until the very end... anything to avoid having to take responsibility for their economic misdeeds (and they are LEGION!)

This week the debate is over Belle Isle. It's an island in the Detroit River, once the jewel of the riverfront with the Casino (not a place to gamble) and the oldest aquarium in North America, an aviary, etc. The Detroit Grand Prix is held there, and the Detroit Gold Cup hydroplane races (the oldest motor sports trophy in North America) are held just off the shores of Belle Isle.

But the place is a sh*thole now. Familes don't hang out there, but wild, murderous youth do. A few years ago a young lady was murdered when she was tossed off the MacArthur Bridge (named after the general) like trash. The roads are crumbling to the point where they were literally falling apart during this year's Grand Prix.

The state offered to lease the island for 99 years, turning it into a state park. The city can't afford to keep lights on in the parts of the city where people live, they sure as hell can't afford upkeep on an island where nobody lives! But the city balked, they didn't want the "white devils" in Lansing to "steal their jewel" (uh, it hasn't been a "jewel" in a LONG time! It's an eyesore!) Alright, the state cut that down to 30 years, which is plenty of time to fix it up and maybe give the city time to rebuild so they can take it over and actually take care of it. Nope, not good enough for the city council. They want ten years, max. That's patently ridiculous! They basically want the state to fix it up then immediately turn it back over to the city that destroyed it and couldn't afford to fix it (or even maintain it)! Unbelievable!

Sad but true. That's Detroit.
