Robear asked in an earlier post about my travel discount links. I present for your perusal, an unedited list of my links that I keep in a Word document for reference. Well ok, I threw some hyper-text codes in ;).

Some of the info might already be included in the board's FAQ. Some of the links might be a bit outdated or repeated within the document. I haven't done an update in a while.

The list is a bit Portugal & Euro-centric, since that's where we like to go :). But I hope you might find some useful tidbits in it.

They operate Azores Express & normally serve Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel) & Lajes (Terceira) from Boston but during summer months they add flights 2-days/week Boston-Lisbon (Wed & Sun?). One way: $369 and they have returns thru 9/30 at varying prices. It was something like $679 R/T returning during September. I don't know who you need to contact in Boston - you might want to try one of the Portuguese organizations there.

Europe Travel Tips
If you know for sure you are going to be in Italy a while, you may want to invest in a kilometric pass instead of a Eurrail pass. (This would of course depend on where else you go...) You can buy a kilometric pass in Italy at the train stations. It gives you 3000 total km to share between up to 5 people. That will pretty much take you and DH on a circuit similar to Milan, Cinque Terre, Florence, Rome, Venice, and back to Milan. All for about $120. TOTAL. Supplements and upgrades are extra, however.

Also, you might also want to check out www.europebyair.com. They sell airline tickets between European cities for $99/each leg. (That is, you can fly Naples to Madrid for $99, or, if you need to leave from Rome, you'd fly Rome-Venice-Madrid for $198.) A good idea if you want to go far (i.e., Madrid from Rome) or fast (same day travel).

Italy Travel Hints

Get the Berlitz language book and tape. Basic Italian is pretty easy, especially if you know any French or Spanish. Many people speak English, but it's nice to be able to use basic phrases. I would also suggest a book called Culture Shock - Italy. I can't remember the author. It's one of a series that are written for people who are going to work in a particular country and it gives all sorts of insights into why a particular culture behaves the way it does.

This is the flat we stayed in. It's the yellow building. The beds were pushed together to make a queen. I believe the owner also has a larger flat in the same building but upstairs. As you can see, the current rate comes out to $421 +/- for a week!
