Do the English have to pay a tax on their tea or was that stopped with the American revolution?

We have Value Added Tax (VAT) which is 17.5% and paid on all but neccessity items. I would guess that tea is considered a luxury and therefore yes - 17.5% tax for tax :-(.

There is also VAT at a lower rate on household fuel now. How can fuel to warm the house be anything but a neccesity?

cheers
snr
