Does a company have to give advance notice of a stock split? If so, how long?

They do have to give at least some notice. They have to state a record date and an effective date (payment date) so that the stock exchanges can adjust trade prices accordingly. Theoretically they would only have to give a few business days notice, but most companies announce it anywhere from 3-8 weeks in advance.
