DRIP investing is the best way for the small budget investor to get started. Fees and commisions of even discount brokers will have a much larger effect on small budgets. Many companies sell stock direct to investors( as little as 1 share at a time in some cases) for little or no fees. Dividends are reinvested; usually for no fee(sometimes not). Additional investments can be made for no fee in most cases. There are several good books on the subject; usually available at your local library.Don
