Drug costs are growing every year for lots of reasons that have nothing to do with the pharmaceutical manufacturers.Another item that seems to be overlooked is the cost of satsifying FDA requirements. The FDA has extremely strict regulations, and maintaining compliance with these standards adds to the costs of Research and Development. If companies do not satisfy the FDA requirements, they are at the very least shelling out big bucks in fines plus the costs of becoming compliant, at the worst they loose the ability to sell product. I don't think I've ever heard or seen a "why drugs are so expensive" piece on the media that mentioned FDA compliance... I completely agree with Joel - it is quite complicated.
